Amid Coronavirus Outbreak, Major Airlines Waive Change/Cancel Fees
The new coronavirus pandemic has disrupted many people’s travel plans. As flight changes and cancellations are happening, these major US airlines have waived the change/cancel fees.
Each airline company’s policies are different, but many are not only waiving fees for flights departing in March and April, but also for tickets bought in the month of March.
Continue reading for a brief overview of the changes in airlines’ policies. This article contains up to date information for March 13, 2020.
Alaska Airlines
- A waive in change/cancel fees applies to
- Tickets purchased on or before February 26, 2020, whose original travel date was between March 9, 2020, and March 31, 2020.
- Tickets purchased between February 27, 2020, and March 31, 2020, whose original travel date is between February 27, 2020, and February 28, 2021.
- For those who purchased a Saver fare they can
- Cancel their tickets and deposit the refunds into their Alaska Airline My Account Wallets.
- For passengers who purchased Nonrefundable First Class, main, or award tickets, they can
- Change their travel dates to no later than February 28, 2021, and pay for a difference in fare if applicable.
- Cancel their tickets and deposit the refund into their Alaska Airline My Account Wallets.

American Airlines
- Change fees waived for all tickets (including nonrefundable) purchased between March 1, 2020, and March 31, 2020.
- Change fees waived for all tickets purchased before March 1, 2020, for travel through April 30, 2020.
- Changes must be made prior to travel
- Change must be made within 12 months of the ticket’s original issued date, or before the date of December 31, 2020, whichever is sooner.
- When applicable, travelers need to pay for a difference in fare when rescheduling.

Delta Air Lines
- The change fees will be waived one time for people scheduled to travel in March and April. The new travel date must be on or before December 31, 2020, or your ticket expiration date, whichever is sooner.
- The change fees will be waived one time for people purchasing tickets in March. The rebooked travel date must be on or before February 28, 2021.
- Passengers will need to pay for a difference in fare, if applicable.
- Cancellation fees can be waived for the above dates, and refunds will be provided as a voucher for future flights.

Hawaiian Airlines
- The change fees will be waived one time for tickets purchased between March 1, 2020, and March 16, 2020.
- Travelers need to make up for any fare difference.
- Need to contact Hawaiian Airline 24 hours before departure.
- Fees waived for changes made in point of departure, arrival, or stopover; fare differences apply.
- For those with existing bookings booked no later than March 9, 2020, for travel through April 30, 2020, a one-time change fee waiver is provided as long as the new travel date is no later than December 31, 2020.

JetBlue Airways
- Change and cancellation fees suspended for all new flight bookings made between February 27, 2020 and March 5, 2020, for travel through June 1, 2020.
- Change and cancellation fees suspended for all flight bookings made between March 6, 2020, and March 31, 2020, for travel through September 8, 2020.
- Change and cancelation fees suspended for passengers traveling between March 10, 2020, and April 30, 2020.
- Refunds will be issued as a JetBlue travel Bank Credit, valid one year within the date of issue.

Southwest Airlines
- Southwest Airlines states that they have never charged fees for flight changes and cancelations.
- Fare differences will apply
- Cancelation refunds will be valid for future travel up within one year of the original purchase date.
- Cancelation requests must be made 10 minutes before the scheduled departure.

United Airlines
- Change fees waived for tickets purchased between March 3, 2020, and March 31, 2020; trip must be rebooked for a date before December 31, 2020, or within 12 months of the original ticket-issue date, whichever is sooner.
- Change fees waived for those scheduled to travel between March 9, 2020, and April 30, 2020; original tickets must’ve been issued on or before March 2, 2020.
- Difference in fares will be charged in some instances but not in others.
